In a nutshell:
- Is Apple Mail no longer displaying your mailboxes in alphabetical order after an update?
- A known macOS bug that can be fixed without a Terminal hack.
- We’ll show you the straightforward path in the settings — it also works in macOS Sequoia and Tahoe.
Restore alphabetical sorting in Apple Mail
Due to a slip-up, we moved a mailbox folder and thus unintentionally disabled alphabetical sorting in Apple Mail.
Apple’s Mail app remembers the change, so automatic sorting no longer works.
Now the question is: How do we restore it?
We’ll explain how we went about sorting everything alphabetically again in the following bullet points.
Steps to restore alphabetical sorting in Apple Mail:
- Navigate to the Library > Mail folder
- then to your corresponding “V4” folder (or “V2” if applicable)
- Then go to your corresponding mail account, e.g., “244915A4-4D0A-4EEA-BDFD-5AF16C5DB7E3”
- and use the “rm” command to delete the file “.mboxCache.plist.” You can easily delete it using the code below in Terminal. Or watch the video—it should be clear then.
rm ~/Library/Mail/(V4)/_Bezeichnung_des_Mail-Kontos_/.mboxCache.plist
Important:
Before you follow the steps listed above, completely close your email program; otherwise, the same thing will happen as in our video.
