GPT 3

What is GPT-3?

GPT-3 was the third generation of OpenAI’s GPT language models, released in 2020. With 175 billion parameters, it was a breakthrough in machine text generation at the time and formed the basis for the first version of ChatGPT. Today, GPT-3 has been replaced as the standard model by GPT-4o and, since August 2025, by GPT-5. At Waterproof Web Wizard, GPT-3 now appears only in historical documentation, for productive use, current GPT generations or competing models such as Claude and Gemini are the standard.
