Patch / Security Update / Hotfix

Definition: Software fixes of varying urgency. Patch = general fix. Security update = specifically addresses a security vulnerability. Hotfix = emergency fix outside the release cycle.

Everyday analogy: Patch = inspection. Security update = manufacturer recall due to a brake problem. Hotfix = a call saying, “Pull over immediately; we’ll come pick you up.”
