What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is an XML file that lists all relevant URLs of a website for search engines, along with metadata such as the last modified date, update frequency, and priority. It helps Google and other search engines fully crawl the content, especially on large or deeply nested sites. The sitemap is submitted via Search Console and through robots.txt. At Waterproof Web Wizard, we automatically generate sitemaps from the CMS, split them as needed (pages, news, images), and ensure they’re free of noindex URLs, otherwise, this results in unnecessary crawl budget loss.
