Matomo

What is Matomo?

Matomo (formerly Piwik) is the best-known open-source web analytics tool and a GDPR-compliant alternative to Google Analytics. It can be self-hosted (with EU data storage entirely under your own control) or used as a cloud service. Matomo offers core features similar to GA4, visitor tracking, conversion tracking, heatmaps, session recordings, and campaign analysis, all within its own interface. At Waterproof Web Wizard, we recommend Matomo especially for government agencies, educational institutions, and clients with strict data protection requirements, where GA4 is not desired for legal or political reasons.
