A cache is a temporary storage area that holds frequently accessed data, allowing it to be delivered faster than from the original source. On the web, there are several levels of caching: browser, CDN, reverse proxy, CMS, database, and opcode. When configured correctly, caches shorten load times and drastically reduce server load. If configured incorrectly, they deliver outdated content, and users see the old version while the editorial team is searching for the new one. At Waterproof Web Wizard, we document cache rules for each project and verify them during deployment.
